Disability Equality Scheme

Welcome to our Disability Equality Scheme web page. Here you will find information about how we developed our Disability Equality Scheme, a copy of the Scheme and information on the new responsibilities placed on the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body (SPCB) to actively promote equality of opportunity for disabled people.

From December 2006 the Disability Discrimination Act places a duty on all public bodies to effectively promote disability equality and eliminate discrimination for disabled people. This duty places positive, proactive responsibilities on all public organisations to work towards a more equal society by embedding disability equality into the way in which they carry out their functions.

The SPCB will therefore need to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination;
  • promote equal opportunities for disabled people;
  • eliminate disability related harassment;
  • promote positive attitudes towards disabled persons; and
  • encourage participation by disabled persons in public life.
