Before being elected Sarah was for several years co-ordinator for Labour's environmental policy in Scotland. She is currently also a member of Labour's Scottish Policy forum. In November 2004 she received the RSPB Goldcrest Award for the greatest contribution to the development of environmental policy since devolution and in December 2005 was named Scottish Renewables Best Politician.
Since her first election in 1999, Sarah has been involved in a number of local campaigns including more and better affordable housing for Edinburgh residents, improved transport links in the city, particularly to secure and improve the frequency of the 35 bus service, improve flood prevention for areas around the Water of Leith, support for carers, better audiology services locally, responsible licensing, action on anti-social behaviour and various planning issues in the city centre and elsewhere in Edinburgh Central. Sarah has also worked closely with Amnesty International to campaign for the freedom of Burmese Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Sui Kyi and other political prisoners around the world.
