The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev David W. Lacy, led the Parliament in Time for Reflection this week.

He spoke in the Chamber as part of the Moderator's annual visit to Holyrood, during which he also watched First Minister's Question Time, attended committee sessions and met a delegation of MSPs who are due to visit Malawi in early February.

Reverend Lacy's comments at Time for Reflection can be read in the Parliament's Official Report.

'Insight into spirituality'

The Presiding Officer George Reid welcomed the Moderator to the Parliament at an event attended by leaders of several faith groups and MSPs.

George Reid said: "We have close relationships in this Parliament with the churches and all faith groups in Scotland.

"Time for Reflection has given a very interesting insight into spirituality in Scotland over the six years of this Parliament's history."

Reverend Lacy thanked the Parliament, saying: "I am impressed by the welcome expressed to me by all those I have met in the building this week."

Chamber Business usually begins each week with Time for Reflection.

Speakers include representatives of Scotland's different faith groups, as well as those of no religious affiliation.

School pupils and teachers are among those who have had the opportunity to lead Time for Reflection.

Recent contributors include Mrs Carrie Varjavandi, of the Baha'i Council for Scotland, and the Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks, both pictured right.

Other speakers in 2005 were Mr Mohammad Tufail Shaheen of the Islamic Centre in Glasgow, Acharya Medanipati Misra of the Glasgow Hindu Temple, and Canon Bill Anderson of Aberdeen's St Francis of Assisi Church.
