Commonwealth Day 2006
13 March 2006: The Presiding Officer, the Rt Hon George Reid MSP, today presented certificates to young people who took part in an essay competition organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society (Scotland).
In his remarks at the awards ceremony, held in Edinburgh's City Chambers, Mr Reid said:
"Half of the Commonwealth's 1.7 billion citizens are aged under 25. They live in 54 countries - an extended global family which finds unity in diversity".
Commonwealth Day is marked annually on the second Monday in March, and aims to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of the Commonwealth.
