Holyrood 'opens the doors' to Edwin Morgan

21 November 2006

Edwin Morgan and his poem on display at the parliament Two years after writing a poem that marked the opening of Holyrood, Scotland's Poet Laureate Edwin Morgan today made his first visit to the building.

The poet was welcomed to the Scottish Parliament by Presiding Officer George Reid MSP, and viewed the poem on public display in the main hall.

Entitled ‘Open the Doors!’, it was recited by poet and playwright Liz Lochhead at the opening of the Parliament in October 2004.

Edwin Morgan, 86, has waited two years to make his first trip to Holyrood following a period of ill health.

Speaking ahead of the visit he said: "I have only seen photos of Holyrood so far. It seems a very modern building in terms of its architecture and my poem reflects that. I am pleased I am now well enough to visit and see Holyrood and my poem for myself.”

Born in April 1920, Mr Morgan's first book of poetry was published in 1952. He was appointed Scotland’s first official national poet or ‘Scots Makar’ in 2004.
