Youth Parliament competition winners visit the Parliament

School pupils with First Minister Alex Salmond and Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson

On Thursday 21 June, Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson MSP and First Minister Alex Salmond MSP hosted a reception at Holyrood for pupils from around Scotland who won awards in this year’s National Youth Parliament Competition.

During the competition teams of 12 to 18-year-olds recreated the Scottish Parliament's debating chamber in their school, youth group or a local council chamber.

Taking the roles of MSPs, they made a 20-minute video of their debate on a mock bill about a devolved issue.

The winning schools were Belmont Academy in Ayrshire, Morrison’s Academy in Perthshire, Marr College in South Ayrshire and Montrose Academy in Angus.

The competition is organised by the Citizenship Foundation and sponsored by the UK Ministry of Justice and Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People.

The National Youth Parliament Competition Holyrood Model is in its fourth year.
