Young Scots help Futures Forum study on alcohol
and drug use in Scotland

4 October 2007

Scotland's Futures Forum is engaging the help of school pupils as part of a study into alcohol and drug use in Scotland. The Futures project is looking at how Scotland can reduce the damage to its population through alcohol and drugs by half by the year 2025.

An innovative workshop, facilitated by the Young Scot organisation, gave students the opportunity to have their say on the subject.

John Arthur speaks to the students

The workshop used media techniques to look at what can be done to stop the damage caused by alcohol and drugs in Scotland.

Participants had the chance to learn how to write a news story, take part in a press conference, and create their own news articles.

Kenny Gibson MSP, deputy convener of the Parliament's Local Government and Communities Committee, was among those taking questions from the students.

Comments resulting from the day will be fed into the Futures Forum's final report, which will be published in June 2008.

Scotland's Futures Forum was created by the Scottish Parliament to help MSPs, along with policy makers, businesses, academics, and the wider community of Scotland, look beyond immediate horizons, to some of the challenges and opportunities we will face in the future.
