COMMITTEE CALLS FOR EVIDENCE ON FUTURE OF SCHOOLS MANAGEMENT IN SCOTLAND

19 February 2010

The issue of how schools in Scotland are managed and potential changes to their control by local authorities is being highlighted by the Education, Lifelong Learning and Culture Committee which is calling for evidence on the subject.

In light of the ongoing debate about alternative models for managing schools in Scotland, the committee believes it is now the right time to consider the issue.

Committee Convener Karen Whitefield MSP said: “How Scottish schools are, and should be, managed is fundamental to the successful delivery of education to nursery, primary and secondary-level children. The committee would therefore welcome input from anyone with a view on this matter.”

Background
The committee is seeking views to inform its consideration of the issue before it takes a decision on whether to proceed with an inquiry.

The committee has also commissioned the Parliament’s Information Centre to provide a briefing on the structure of state schooling across the UK and internationally.

Written evidence should be submitted no later than noon on Friday 2 July 2010. There will be no extension to this deadline except by application in writing to the convener. Written evidence should be typewritten and concise (as a guide, normally no more than four sides of A4).

It would be helpful if responses could be submitted by email to ellc.committee@scottish.parliament.uk with the name of your organisation or, if appropriate, your name, as the subject line.

Before submitting written evidence, please make yourself aware of the policy on the handling of written evidence by parliamentary committees (15KB pdf).
