Materials on the exterior of the buildingWhat materials were used in the construction of the building?

Most of the materials used in the construction of the building were specified by the architects for the project and reflected their views of what was required structurally and aesthetically. The main materials used in the construction of the building were:

  • Kemnay granite, for cladding and flooring (Kemnay quarry, Aberdeenshire)
  • Belfast slab, for cladding (South Africa)
  • Caithness stone, for flooring and sink units (Caithness, Scotland)
  • Cement (mostly from Blue Circle in Dunbar, Scotland)
  • Oak timber (some Scottish, mostly European)
  • Sycamore timber (European)
  • Pantiles for Queensberry House roof (supplied by Sandtoft Roof Tiles, Doncaster, England)
  • Slate for Queensberry House roof
  • Steel
  • Glass
  • Marble for the Black and White Corridor (Italy)
